| Spotlight on 50th: Alaska Goldpanners on tour
Fairbanks’ hometown Alaska Baseball League team — the
Goldpanners — will go on tour this summer as part of the
state’s (and the team’s) 50th anniversary celebration. In
addition to the team’s regular 2009 season, the Goldpanners
will field a second team to participate in the “Alaska 50
Tour” commemorating the Goldpanner’s historical
“barnstorming” manner of traveling solely by bus from game
to game. One team will play in the Alaska League, while the
other team will take part in the “Alaska 50 Tour,”
culminating at the 75th National Baseball Congress
Tournament in Wichita, Kansas. The tour will also include
games in British Columbia and the states of Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Colorado,
Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. For more information, visit

Alaska has key role in NBC
Wichita Eagle
Fairbanks' all-time roster is a Who's Who
that includes Barry Bonds, Tom Seaver, Dave
Winfield, Dave Kingman, Rick Monday, Bob
Boone and Graig Nettles.
When I think of the NBC Tournament,
I think about the Fairbanks Goldpanners and their great
uniforms, sprinkled with red and gold, and the fact that
they were from Alaska, which I didn't associate at all with
baseball. Until I saw them play. (Bob Lutz)
