Longview turns golden on Tuesday.

A touring team representing the legendary Alaska Goldpanners baseball club will take on the Red Lion Senior American Legion squad at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at David Story Field in an exhibition matchup.

The Goldpanners, an amateur summer team comprised of college players, feature an all-time roster that includes the likes of Tom Seaver, Dave Winfield and Barry Bonds. The club, in celebration of its 50th season and Alaska’s 50th year as a state, is making an “Alaska 50 Tour” that will cover British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.

The tour culminates with a week-long visit to Kansas, where the Goldpanners will compete in the National Baseball Congress Tournament beginning Aug. 1 with an exhibition game against the Liberal BeeJays.

The ’Panners are using a split squad to complete the tour and to fulfill their home schedule in Fairbanks, Alaska, which ends Aug. 2. On Aug. 3, both teams will meet up in Kansas for the start of the NBC Tournament.

Former Lower Columbia College head coach Ed Cheff was the field manager of the ’Panners for five seasons (2002-06), with current LCC pitching coach Rob Hippi serving as his pitching coach for two of those years (2002-03).

The split-squad team coming to Longview — officially named the Midnight Sun Goldpanners — features current Red Devils Eric Lane (infielder from Port Angeles), the NWAACC Western Division MVP last season as a freshman, and Tim Culligan (pitcher from Hillsboro, Ore.).

The Goldpanners arrive in Longview on Monday for a workout, and after playing Red Lion in a single nine-inning game Tuesday, they’ll travel to Kamloops, British Columbia, to compete in the 47th annual Kamloops International Tournament.

The remainder of the tour follows.

The touring team will be coached by former longtime San Diego State skipper Jim Dietz, who won 485 games in two stints with the ’Panners from 1970 to ’77 and 1990 to ’93. Dietz coached Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn at San Diego State, along with Longview native Bud Black, the current San Diego Padres manager who pitched in the major leagues from 1982 to ’95.

A reality-show film crew also will be making the tour with the Goldpanners as part of a “Touching the Game” series by Alaska filmmaker Anthony Keel.

Red Lion is the best summer baseball team in Cowlitz County, featuring many of the top recently graduated high school players and several LCC players.

Tickets for Tuesday’s game are $2 for adults and $1 for seniors and students.

Palo Alto High grad and Stanford pitcher Carey Schwartz joins the Midnight Sun Goldpanners on Monday at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., to begin a month-long barnstorming tour across 10 states and Canada.

Schwartz was one of the first six players added to the team, which is managed by Jim Dietz, the legendary amateur baseball coach.

The Goldpanners open their tour at the Kamloops International Tournament in British Columbia, Canada on next Thursday. The tour ends in August at the National Baseball Congress in Wichita, Kansas.
