KAMLOOPS, BC- After a tough 2-1 loss on Thursday night, the Midnight Sun Goldpanners needed an easy win to rebuild their confidence and morale. That’s exactly what they got against the Kamloops Sun Devils Friday, as the Goldpanners staved off tournament elimination in an 8-1 victory.

Thomas Hoenshell pitched a complete game six-hitter, and five different Goldpanners scored runs, as the home team won going away.

From top to bottom, the Goldpanners seemed to have no problem hitting Kamloops starter Pat Brown. Eric Lane went 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Duetchman 2-4 with three runs batted in, and every Goldpanner starter in the field except for one finished the game with at least a hit or RBI.

The scoring began early, and came often for the home team, as they plated a run just three hitters into their first at-bat. Josh Ashenbrenner had a one out triple, and Lane had the first of his three hits, an RBI single, giving the Goldpanners their first lead of the game.

As the game progressed, the offense continued to shine. Trent Olezszcuk added an RBI single in the second, and David Duetchman the same in the third. Two more were plated in the fourth, and three in the fifth.

And with that run support, Hoenshell did the rest. The 6’5 right hander from Cypress College struck out five, giving up just one run.

The Goldpanners will continue with action in the loser’s bracket on Saturday, as they will take on a yet to be determined team at 3 p.m. in Kamloops. Should they win, they’ll advance to play on Sunday, where they’ll need to win three times to wrap up the Kamloops tournament.
