HAYS, KS- The Midnight Sun Goldpanners just can’t seem to catch a break.
Just a day after losing 1-0, they put five runs on the board, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Hays Larks 6-5.
Coming into the 9th inning, the Goldpanners were trailing 6-4, and put together a big rally that just fell short. With runners on first and second and one out, Josh Kalalau had an RBI single, cutting the Hays lead to one. However, after Travis Anderson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Mykal Stokes fouled a 2-2 pitch into the glove of catcher Ben Turner to end the game.
With the offense clicking, it was actually the Goldpanners pitching and defense which failed them. The Goldpanners gave up unearned runs in both the 2nd and 7th innings. Reliever Carey Schwartz, who’s been so effective out of the bullpen this season, was the losing pitcher as he gave up three straight hits, before being removed in the 8th inning without getting an out.
As for the Goldpanner's offense, it got started early, when a Kalalau sacrifice fly scored Trent Olezsczuk to make the score 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning. Midnight Sun added three more on a monstrous Travis Anderson 3-run home run in the 6th.
Starter Thomas Hoenshell was effective for the Goldpanners, but nowhere near as effective as he’s been, as the Cypress College righthander gave up four runs (only two earned) in seven innings pitched.
Midnight Sun will look to end their three game losing streak Tuesday, when they travel to Liberal, KS to take on the Liberal BeeJays. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. central, and can be heard on www.goldpanners.com.
