DERBY, KS- The Midnight Sun Goldpanners are headed to the NBC World Series in just a few days. And they are headed there on a losing streak.
Starter Tim Culligan went just 1.1 innings and Josh Kalalau made a crucial 1st inning error, as the Goldpanners fell Thursday night to the Derby Twins 7-2 in Derby, KS.
Derby jumped on Culligan early, when he again struggled with his control. Kevin Hall led off the inning with a single, followed by four Culligan base on balls. With two outs Will Fiel hit a line drive that Kalalau dropped in right field, allowing three additional runs to score, and putting the Goldpanners in a 4-0 deficit, one from which they’d never recover.
Culligan gave up one more walk in the 2nd inning, before he was relieved by Carey Schwartz. On the evening, Schwartz was one of the few bright spots for the Goldpanners, as he pitched 5.2 innings, giving up just three hits and one run striking out eight Derby batters.
Schwartz kept his team close, but the offense never could catch up for Midnight Sun. The visitors didn’t get their first run of the game until the 4th inning, and even then it was without a hit. Trent Olezsczuk reached on a walk, making it to second on a Josh Ashenbrenner groundout. He then stole third, later scoring on a throwing error by Derby catcher Eric Sim.
The only other Midnight Sun run of the evening came on Cam Christian’s first home run of the season, a deep ball over the right centerfield fence. It was just the Goldpanners third hit of the game, and came in the 7th inning.
With most of their schedule done, Midnight Sun will now head to Wichita, KS where they will take part in two exhibition games in the NBC World Series. The first is set for 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. For full coverage, please tune into www.goldpanners.com
