Gigi scored on Oscar night, April 5, 1959.   It got Best Picture, Best Directing, Writing, Art Direction and Film Editing.  It won Best Song and Best scoring of a musical.     Susan Hayward was named Best Actress for "I Want to Live!".  David Niven won Best Actor for "Separate Tables".  Burl Ives ("The Big Country") and Wendy Hiller ("Separate Tables") won in supporting roles.

NEWS

The U.S. launched its first earth satellite, Explorer 1, on 2/1/58.  A one pound squirrel moneky was launched 600 miles into space 12/13/58. 

Pan American began transatlantic flights in October 1958 with Boeing 707 service between NY and Paris.

A postcard rose from 2c to 3c, and airmail letters from 6c to 7c. 

Charles de Gaulle became French Premier.

Nikita Khrushchev became Soviet Premier and met with Chairman Mao Zedong in Peking.

Fidel Castro launched his offensive against the Batista government.

The Hula Hoop was the year's hottest item, selling more than 100 million worldwide.

Elvis Presley joined the Army March 24, 1958.

The quiz show scandals broke into the public consciousness when it was learned some contestants had been fed information in advance.

SPORTS

The New York Yankees and Milwaukee Braves dominated baseball play.  The Dodgers and Giants finished their first season in their new western cities.  The Yanks won the Series....  names to remember from the World Series were Hank Bauer, Whitey Ford, Bob Turley and Don Larson for the Yanks... Dodgers Roy Campanella was paralyzed from the neck down in a January auto accident.  Stan Musial of the Cardinals scored his 3,000th hit.  

Pete Dawkins was awarded the Heisman Trophy.  Louisiana State University finished the season with a perfect record.  Sugar Ray Robinson regained his middleweight title.  Floyd Patterson was the heavyweight champ.  Archie Moore defended his light heavyweight title.
