Jerry Humble
Sturgis, SD

Hello Everyone,

While still in high school I joined the Army National Guard and spent 8 years with the 109th

Later I drove an OTR truck for three years and after that I went to work for the minuteman missile sites in South Dakota and Wyoming.  During this time I also helped my parents part time with their implement business, Sturgis Tractor and also the Humble Ranch located at Fairpoint.

In 1962 I married Helen Hart & together we had two children.  Lori works for the University of Wyoming and now that her children are nearing high school age she is pursuing her doctorate. Jason is a teacher/coach and lives in Kaycee, Wyoming and is also the assistant principle there.

In 1963 I went to work for my parents full time in the implement business.   My dad passed away in 1966 and I later purchased the business from my mother.

In 1973 I took over the Amoco Bulk from George Wendt and in 1974 I purchased ground from Albert & Lillian Kost and developed it into Oak Acre’s Mobile Home Park.  I sold the Sturgis Tractor business in 1975 and the bulk business in 1981.

Helen and I got the big “D” in 1975.  I later met and married Jeannie Chapman/Lehmann.  She had two children from her first marriage, Steven Lehmann who is a captain with Southwest Airlines, and Susan Lehmann Fernen who is an account executive for Mid Continent communication in Rapid City.  All together we have 7 grandchildren.

The fun times in our lives are many but especially so when we are around family, friends or riding our motorcycle.  We have made many trips on it traveling into 20 states and 5 provinces.  We have seen some beautiful country!    We also enjoy snowmobiling and camping. We sold Oak Acres in 2002 and built a town home here in Sturgis.

I am pretty much retired and Jeannie will retire from Sturgis Regional Hospital sometime this summer.  We plan on spending more time with our family, grandchildren, do more golfing and traveling.  I still manage the Humble ranch partnership and enjoy hunting so I try to get to the ranch as much as possible as the hunting rights are quite favorable!

Hope to see you all at the reunion!

JEAN JORDAN MILLEN
Warrensburg, MO

Husband: George Millen     Children:   Roy  born 1971   Elizabeth born  1973

I received  a Bachelor degree in 1962 from the University of South Dakota and  a Masters of Library Science in 1963 from University of Denver.   I was a librarian at Buena Vista College and Black Hills State College before coming to Warrensburg in 1970.

We were married in June 1968.   I was a school librarian for 27 years at Crest Ridge Schools before taking the position of Reference Coordinator at Trails Regional Library.   I retired in December, 2007 after 44 years in the library profession..  George also retired  in December from the University of Central Missouri where he was Assist Dean of the Library.

Our son Roy is the Program Coordinator for the local PBS station, KMOS here in Warrensburg.

Our daughter Beth has a degree in Interior Design and lives in Phoenix  with her husband, Denny and their 2 wonderful sons, Christian & Cole.

We are buying into a condo in Cave Creek, AZ where we plan to spend some of the winter months.  We will be 4 miles from those two grandsons.  Christian is 5 and is in kindergarten.  Cole is 3.

At the present I am the President of the Board for the Preschool and Daycare at the Episcopal Church in Warrensburg.  Getting the school off the ground was a big challenge for our church but it is doing well in its second year.  Speaking of our church, George & I have been involved in working with the Sunday Supper program where we provide a Sunday evening meal for the homeless or near homeless.   I believe we have had the program for about 8 years.

GLORIA RAETZ ROBERDEAU
Brandon, SD

Name: Gloria Roberdeau
Spouse: Larry Roberdeau
Brandon, SD
Children: 1 girl (Terri) 2 boys (Kelly and Randy)
Grandchildren: 5
Great Grandchildren: 2

Larry and I were married in June of 1958 and celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary this year.

Our daughter:   Terri lives in Vancouver WA and has 5 children (hers his and theirs).

Our oldest son:   Kelly, lives in Spearfish SD and has 3 children (hers).

Our youngest son:   Randall lives in Anchorage AK and has 2 children.

I got married a month after graduation. We lived in Sturgis until 1961, moving to Deadwood where Larry ran his own service station and I worked for a loan company, as a collector.  Five years later we moved to Spearfish, where Larry worked for an automotive/service company and I worked at the Safeway store as a meat wrapper (fun & games) but the money was better than working for a collection agency.  Besides I really didn’t relish calling and asking for money from people I knew and knew didn’t have the money!

One of Larry’s biggest dreams was that one day he/we could go to Alaska - not to live per se, but to do some hunting and fishing for “BIG” fish. Well, that day finally came.   Larry came home from work and told me he and another guy, Bob he worked with, had a chance to go to Alaska. So a couple of weeks later he climbed in our old Oldsmobile and away he and Bob went, smiles from ear to ear (you’d have thought they were getting paid for a dental commercial) and without a dollar in their pockets! How’s that for a “dare to dream” wish? While there, they decided they should maybe, just maybe, get a job and live there awhile. The money was more impressive for the type of jobs they did, than back in Spearfish. So in July I followed him (he couldn’t get away from this old gal that easy). I managed to get a job right away working for Nordstrom’s Dept. Store, as an A/c’s payable clerk.

Now I bet you are wondering if we’d decided to leave the kids in South Dakota ~ we couldn’t, because our parents were looking to get rid of them after two and half months and badly needed a break from these three beautiful, well behaved kids ~ age’s five to eight! Also school was about to start and in September they decided to bring them “North to Alaska.” I think their real reason was to find out what kind of a mistake we’d made by picking up and moving to Alaska, of all places, without checking it out first. Must have proven to be a good move, as we lived in Anchorage for 29 years. During that time Larry became the manager and part owner of a waterworks supply company and I worked for an Alaskan owned, 17 store grocery chain, starting out as a bookkeeper, then moved on to accounting; became office manager of A/c‘s payable and billing; moved up to Administrative Asst., then on to Executive Assistant to the President and owner, and for Vice-President of Operations. All this was my college education and it only took me twenty-seven years to complete. Every time I think of my bookkeeping experience I remember Col. Brown ~ as he told me “Gloria you can do anything you want, just don‘t do anything that has to do with math!” I have to laugh and wish I could see the shock on his face when he heard this.   I’ll bet he would have flipped out!

That was quite some visit huh? But the Lord definitely blessed us and we never regretted a nanosecond of going to Alaska and living there for all those 29 years.

While in Alaska, I learned to snowmobile and rode over a couple of cliffs, well VERY LARGE moguls, and threw myself over the handlebars, just for the fun of it - ha! And I called that learning to snowmobile!? We also did a lot of bowling and I managed to take home a few trophies ~ for last place! Last but not least, Larry taught me how to shoot the shotgun and we both entered many registered shoots. I found it great fun when I‘d beat the guys~ they didn’t! We both love the game and even managed to get a couple or more trophies out of it. Larry still shoots, but since I was diagnosed w/MS in 2000, I don’t do too much of it anymore.

When I gave my notice to retire, everyone I worked with asked me “Why in the world would anyone want to retire in South Dakota and what in the world will you do after you retire?” I told them good old South Dakota was mild, easy-going, beautiful, very little crime, lighter traffic and if I liked to shop, there were enough places to keep me happy. And as far as that goes, we actually prefer that people are not aware of our little secret, and we like to keep it that way! In reply to their “what will you do after retirement?” I told them I’d keep myself busy, not to worry. And boy, oh boy, was that ever an understatement!

While in Anchorage, I found the Lord again and He graciously took this sinner back into His arms, and I’m busy doing His work wherever He needs me.

When we retired we moved back to Spearfish SD, where we built a beautiful home on the mountain. After six years we decided this was not where we wanted to permanently plant ourselves. So ~ we made the move to eastern SD (Sioux Falls) in 2003 to satisfy Larry’s urge to reclaim his childhood. We now live on 5 acres, with a church and a couple of sloughs as our neighbors, about 6 miles north of Brandon and 7 miles north-east of Sioux Falls.

After moving here, I started an MS Support Group, became a Discussion Leader for Bible Study Fellowship, work in the hospitality room at church and usher when I’m called to do so.

My favorite memories of good old SHS, are my friends, band and our little dance band, remember that Ann? Fun, crazy and interesting! I often think of the silly things that we used to do, and wonder how we ever made it through without getting ourselves into more trouble than we usually found ourselves in. But, I never want to forget them and love to reminisce every now and again. Thank you all for making my high school memories so special!

MARY ANN BRAITHWAITE CRAWFORD
Sundance, WY

After I graduated I worked at Sly and Freeman Drug in Sturgis for a year. I married Bill Garretson in August of 1959. We lived in Louisiana until 1978, and had two girls and a boy. I worked in a sewing factory making blue jeans for three years and for the City of Slidell, LA as a sales tax clerk for 2-3 years.

We got divorced and I moved back to South Dakota and worked for Holiday Inn in Spearfish for 5 years. Then I went to work at BHSU for 4 years.

I married Wilbur Crawford in 1988 and we live in Sundance, WY. My son died in 1999. My girls live in Oregon and Louisiana. I have 7 stepchildren.   My daughter, Robin, who lives in Slidell, LA lost her home in Katrina, but they have rebuilt.

I love living in Sundance.  I worked for the Crook County School District for awhile then went to work at the Crook County Museum here in Sundance. I retired from there in 1995 and my husband retired from the Crook County School District in 1995 also.

We sold our place out of town and bought a house in town.

We have 40 grandkids and 12 great-grandkids in our combined families. Our big family keeps us busy. When we retired we took our 5th wheel down South for several winters. Now we are just happy to stay home and enjoy life.

You wanted to know some memories of SHS. I remember I skipped a study hall. It was the first time I had done this. We went to Carl's Confectionary and I had my first cherry coke and got to hear Elvis for the first time on the jukebox. I had to walk back to school because I had to catch the bus and heard someone walking behind me. When I turned around, it was COL. BROWN, the principal! He asked me if I was going to skip study hall again and of course I told him I wasn't.

I also have fond memories of our Jr. and Sr. proms. The theme for the Jr. prom was "Evening in Paris" and the theme for the Sr. prom was "Oriental Gardens".

All four of my yearbooks were lost. I sure would like to have one from 1958.

My favorite time of life is now. Why? No Time Clock!

Joe’s Life in a Nut Shell
Joe DesJarlais
Sturgis, SD

NUT, boy does that fit. I can not count the number of times that word has been used by someone when they were referring to me.

As many of you might remember, academics were never my strong suit but if it had something to do with being creative, constructive or productive, that was where I found my 15 minutes in the sun. If I found an old board with a knot hole in it I saw a door to a bird house and soon there would be 3 or 4 baby bird heads sticking out looking for their supper.

My first job that summer after graduation was drawing the plans for the interstate from Blackhawk to 17 miles east of Rapid City to the town of Wasta. It means, OK, Sure, You bet, Hello, Good morning, good by, have a good day or any number of other greetings ( a little Indian talk). I was born down on the Rosebud Indian reservation.

Then it was off to college at Brookings.   There again I struggled with the academics but found my place in the art department.   One of the things I learned in college was, after studies at night it was down to the pub for a beer and [girls],  and both cost money. Sooo -- I took a job at the school as a commercial artist. That got me a beer and a date Sat. night and artist of the year at the year end banquet. The next year it was off to Iowa State to further my studies in architecture. Much bigger school, More Girls and the greatest pub with the greatest pizza you ever tasted. NEEDED MORE MONEY! So I took a job selling pots and pans to single working girls. Now if there was ever a job that would take your mind off your studies that was it. Nonetheless it provided a beer and pizza every night and by this time, you guessed it, more GIRLS. One night I was selling cook wear to a group of engaged, graduating nurses when this beautiful young thing came floating down the dorm's beautiful marble staircase. I’m graduating but not engaged, handsome young man she said, eyelashes fluttering, would you sell me a set of those pots and pans, “Said the spider to the fly”.

Now for the rest of the story! In six months we were married and once again you guessed it, no, this time I was paying for that set of pots and pans. Ten months later the stork showed up with the first of three, Tami, Joe and Scott. My poor mother, she was sure the old adage would come true, “The first one can come any time after the ring is slipped onto the finger”. She should be glad she doesn’t live today. When the first one comes, that’s the incentive to slip the ring on the finger.

I designed homes in Des Moines Iowa for a short time, dad took sick and I wanted to move back to the Black Hills so between those two reasons I drug my lovely bride to the end of the earth, as she put it, and we made our home in Sturgis. Sylvia, my Bride of 48 years took a job in nursing on a psy. ward at the VA Hospital, good training for living with me. She has now been there for 44 years, thank God, as someone had to feed me. I went to barber college and helped my dad, he died, and I found that I loved the one-on-one contact with people. I started to do women’s hair, they spend a lot more on their hair and makeup then men do, that was a no brainer. I went on to study Trichology, what ever that is and ran a number of businesses. Sylvia, the kids and I built our own home and as any of you that have built a home know, it’s an on going, never ending project.

At the ripe old age, change that to mature age, of 42, which was in 1982, my heart gave me a bit of trouble, had quad bypass surgery, a heart-attack and a mild stroke. I was sent home and told I had 6 months but if I changed my ways and with a lot of luck, maybe 5 years. In 85 I had another mild heart-attack and stroke. From there I was good to go until 87 when I had a massive heart-attack, lost the right side of my heart. I remember the doctor telling my son and wife that some times people with that type of heart event will linger for 2 to 4 hours. I told my wife to get me out of there to another hospital in 20 minutes or I was going to walk. The doctor said I would never make it to the door, Soooo I took my chances. She got a helicopter and I was off on a flight for life. That time I was good until 97 when I had another heart-attack and quad bypass once again. Here we are 11years later and am now working 40 to 60 hours a week.

My life changed for the best that anyone can imagine in 1989 when I started volunteering for an organization called Mended Hearts, a support group for people and their families that have had a heart event. In 2004 I helped found a support group for children with heart defects and heart disease and their families. It’s called Mended Little Hearts and in 3 short years it is now nation wide with 27 chapters. We start our support when the baby is still in the womb and is diagnosed with heart problems and we continue that support until they turn 18. Then they move to an adult congenital heart defect group (ACHD). I also volunteer for the American Heart Assoc. There’s also the city politics that I have found myself mixed up in. That’s what I do in my spare time.

In my real life I still need to work with wood, metal, glass or anything else that lets me be creative. We have had a campground (for 29 years), Sturgis Hide Away, for the motorcycle rally.    Lately I have been working with a number of our classmates helping to put together a class reunion.

As we all have gotten older (?) make me a promise, when you get here to Sturgis High School you will not use that word Old. Change it to More Mature, life just gets better and better each year.

High School was a BLAST, the dances, the games, the life in the halls and yes, in the class rooms. Boy I sure hope bloody Lil doesn’t get her hand on this great piece of writing!

SHARON SCHMIDT ROSS
Sturgis, SD

After high school, I graduated from business school in Rapid, and then a girl friend and I went to Florida where we both worked as secretaries in different offices in a big department store. After a year, she came back to SD to marry the boyfriend left behind. I worked there for about a year and a half, and then married and went to New Orleans to live. I worked for a motion picture advertising company there for another year or so, then came back to Sturgis and was a stay at home mom to my daughter. Vernon Ross & I were married in 1967. I worked for a credit union in Sturgis as an assistant manager, teller, bookkeeper, all around flunky for 32 years, and retired in 2006. Was offered the manager’s job there, but being top dog never appealed to me.

Daughter Corinne Johnson and her husband Steve and black lab, Mickie, live in Washington state. Corinne drives school bus, and Steve is an accident investigator for the county. They do a lot of hunting and fishing.

Stepson Jerry Ross and wife live south of Rapid City. Jerry retired from Wells Fargo Bank three years ago, and spends a lot of time golfing in the summer. He & Linda have three grown children.

Vern’s other son died in 1980 and he had 4 children. Total, we have 7 grandchildren, only two living close by, and 13 great grandchildren, all of whom live great distances away. We do get to see them two or three times a year, but it’s not as if they were next door. We enjoy them.

We used to go deer hunting, but climbing the hills is hard work now, so now we enjoy the slower pace of camping and fishing. I’ve always had a garden, and this summer, pulling weeds was good therapy while I was recovering from cancer. I enjoy the trips to Washington and Canada fishing with our daughter and husband. I believe I could fish every day and never get tired of it, be it fly fishing, tubing, or throwing lures-----in SD or wherever there’s water. It’s all fun.

Just a few years ago, I ran into Joan Dempsey, and found out she lived in Florida at the same time I was there, and not very far from where I lived. I wish I had known that at the time, it would have been nice to visit with somebody from home. I enjoy running into various ones from Sturgis high school from time to time, and feel that back then was a good time to be in high school. How innocent we were!

Sherrol Ellefson Barbour Lichte
Montrose, CO

My husband's name is Fred and between us we have 4 children.  My son Brad and his wife Sheila live in Memphis.  Fred has two daughters and one son.   Erika and  husband Dave have 2 girls and a boy, they are living in Carmel Valley, CA.  Gretchen and husband Tony have a new baby boy and live in LA.  Nathan and wife Siri reside in Phoenix.

It took me 10 years, but I graduated from BH with a BS in Elementary Education and minors in history and physical education.  My 15 years of teaching first grade were spent in Mountain Home, ID, Rapid City, Cheyenne and Rawlins WY.

In 1980 my first husband, Ed Barbour and youngest son, Bryce, were killed by a drunk driver.  Brad was a junior at Rawlins High School.  He graduated in 1982 and started school at ASU, so I moved to Arvada, CO and went to travel school.  As a travel agent I took advantage of all the trips I could--to places like South Africa, Cancun, Bermuda, Germany, British Isles, Alaska, Canada and many areas in the US.

Fred and I were introduced by mutual friends in 1992.  We've been married 15 years.  We lived in Arvada until he retired from the USGS, then we moved to Woodland Hills ( just up the road from Black Hawk) .  We lived there for 3 years, then moved to Montrose in 2001.  It's a great place to live and we plan to stay here forever.

We both love to travel, play bridge (that's how we met), golf, walk, fish, and read.  We enjoy but get extremely frustrated with the Bronco games--especially this year.  Jo Ann Barnett and I visit most half times during the season.  We get to catch up on each other's live and kids.  It's fun.

I have been lucky to have many cherished  memories over the years, and  now is definitely one of my very  favorite times .  Fred and his children have brought a whole new dimension to my life.  With four children, their spouses and four grandchildren in our lives, we are truly blessed.
