Merlyn R Sperle
Sturgis, SD

I initially planned on joining the Marine’s with Jerry Fenner after high school but due to an injury to my knee the Corps was no longer interested in me.  So I stayed in the local area and worked on construction crews (I-90 and Titan missile site) for a couple of years. I joined the Air Force in Jan 1961, where I began my career as an Air Traffic Controller.

I married Cheryl Reimer in Oct 1961 at Lead, SD.  We have two children:  Ronald lives in Belton, MO and Kathleen lives in Sturgis.  We have one granddaughter (10 yr old ReAnna) who lives with her father in MO.

During my 21 years in the military I was assigned to the following states/countries:  Texas, Bermuda, Mississippi, Vietnam, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, Montana, Missouri and England.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1982 I went back to school to complete the final 9 hours required for a BA in Business Management.  That accomplished I worked for the IRS about 1 year before transferring to the FAA (Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center).

Cheryl and I moved back to South Dakota in 1988 and eventually settled in Sturgis in 1991 (30 years after leaving).  I then worked as a cashier in a Deadwood casino until Cheryl was diagnosed with cancer in 2003.  After three consecutive years of treatment she eventually became too weak to receive anymore chemotherapy.  She passed away in September 2006; 3 weeks short of our 45th wedding anniversary.

As of now all my retirement plans (traveling around the US; return trip to England) have been put on hold, but maybe some day will be resurrected.  I spend the winters cleaning my fishing equipment, shoveling snow, shivering, and pondering why I wanted to move back to SD.  But then spring arrives and provides me with the answer.  It’s again time to go fishing and camping with my rat terrier CJ; aka: knucklehead, and engaging in other spring/summer time activities (planting and maintaining my flower and vegetable garden)  plus,  taking full advantage of the beautiful Black Hills with its most precious attribute:  ELBOW ROOM.

ANDRA JORDAN SIMS
West Des Moines, IA

Wow! 50 years! Half a century! And I’m even older than that! Amazing! It seems like yesterday when we were walking down those halls. I got married Feb. 1, 1959 to a guy from Vale that I’d met at a dance out there on the very day he’d enlisted in the Army, and he re-enlisted when we got married. We spent most of the first 3 yrs. at Ft. Knox, Ky. where my daughter, Cindy, was born on New Years Eve of that year, and my son, Brad, in Sept. ’61. We were also at Ft. Rucker, Alabama for a short while (my least favorite place in the whole world, I think). It was hot, humid, and every kind of bug you can think of lived there! Brad was a baby and got sick from the water, I guess, then  they both got measles. I was never so glad to be back in good old South Dakota. We lived in Rapid and Sturgis where we ended up getting divorced.

I moved to Phoenix and lived with my folks for about a yr. before marrying someone I had met in Sturgis. He was a store mgr. and we moved to Bloomington, Mn., eventually to Iowa and lived in Knoxville, Indianola, Ames, and after another divorce I settled in Des Moines, and have been here since ‘83. When we have a cold snowy winter like we have had this year, I wonder why, but I’ll probably be here the rest of my life or somewhere near because Brad and his family live about 40 miles from here in Knoxville, Ia. He and his wife have 5 children, 4 boys and 1 girl, ranging in age from 5 to 16. Cindy and her husband have two daughters ages 6 and 12, adopted from Korea, and they live in the Minneapolis area. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would have 7 grandchildren from my two kids, but I’m sure glad I do.

Over the years I worked in the store my husband managed, and we moved here to buy a Ben Franklin, so I had my hand in there, too. When I first moved to Des Moines, I had an over the road job selling lamps and lampshades, and drove all over the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan., Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, and the eastern edge of Wyoming and Montana. I drove about a hundred thousand miles a year, and it was the most fun job I ever had. Stayed in a motel 4 nights a week, and never had to wash a dish (I have a kitchen now cuz it came with the house!), make a bed, or clean a toilet! What woman wouldn’t love it?! But all good things must come to an end, and I became a Registered Rep with Prudential. I finally retired from there in 2000, put my cat, Bud, in the car and took off for Washington and Oregon to visit my brother, Steve, and youngest sister, Penny.

So what do I do with my time now? Big changes. I finally decided to remarry-we’ll have our fifth anniversary Aug. 30, 2008. He was a firefighter in Des Moines for 45 years and had his own TV repair business. He has a daughter in LA, so we go out there-most recently in Oct. 07. And yes, Bud, still goes along! We visited my cousin, John Kenoyer, in San Diego, and then drove to Phoenix where one of Verl’s grandsons is a chef in Scottsdale. His other 2 grandsons live here in Des Moines, one engaged, and the other has a daughter, age 2, and a son just born in Nov. We do get to the Hills once in awhile. We had a family reunion in 2005 and stayed in a lodge in Hill City, and I always visit my cousin, Linda Kenoyer Burge, but I never run into anyone I know from school.

When we lived in Bloomington, Mn. Cathy Schummer and Billie Ritchel both lived there for awhile, and we got together a couple of times, and Betty Dodson came to see me once when I was at a family reunion at Vale. That was really a surprise and a lot of fun. And I stopped in the shop to see Joe when he was still there. Over the years, he’s been the one reliable, steady source of info even if he is nuts! It was always fun to see someone from the old days.

When the kids were young, I did a lot of sewing of garments, curtains, drapes, etc. Now I’m into quilting, belong to the Des Moines Area Quilt Guild, and take lots of work shops cuz I’m still not sure what kind of quilting I want to do, but I’m leaning more and more toward the art quilts. I guess I just love all the embellishments they have now-paint, fancy threads, beads, foil and stuff you’d never think of! I also still read a lot, and I’m president of United Methodist Women at my church, and do other volunteer work. I’ve never been politically minded, have always been registered as an Independent, but I was so disgusted with the current state of affairs, in my dotage I volunteered for the Obama campaign and was the precinct captain at our caucus here-pretty fun stuff. Also, this person who’s led a pretty sedentary life, and never been in a gym until 2 years ago, works out 4 times a week! But what do you know, it really works! Blood pressure’s down, liver straightened out, glucose levels are where they’re supposed to be. Isn’t it strange where life leads us?

Favorite time of life is every morning I wake up!!

I have lots of good school memories-it’s hard to pick just one because I always loved going to school from first grade on. But it was fun to go around with the Jobs Daughters and wake up the music teacher by singing “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning! I always remember that last study hall of the day when Mr. Woodle would leave for a smoke and some of us would go sit on the girls rest room floor for the rest of the hour-you’d think we’d have been able to find a better place than that!! Also, wearing those crinolines that we starched with Knox gelatin so our skirts would brush both sides of the desks as we made our way down the aisle, and the crinkly sound they made.

I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone again.

LELAND AND JANET (SYMONDS) BRINK
Belle Fourche, SD

Hi to everyone! As you may remember, Leland and I were a thing all through high school. We became engaged during Homecoming of the Senior year.

After graduation I worked at a Western store in Sturgis and Leland worked in road construction. We were married in February of 1959.

We followed construction in South Dakota, Montana and North Dakota before deciding to settle in Sturgis. Leland was a heavy equipment operator for Meade County and I was a bookkeeper for Piggly Wiggly.

In 1970 we moved to Hulett, WY where we lived for 36 years. Leland drove a truck for the sawmills and ended up building and maintaining roads for Crook County for the last 18 years until retirement. I started out as a homemaker and gardener and ended up operating my own gift shop in Hulett. The shop had 650 different kinds of candy and lots of gift items, much of the gifts hand made.   It was a block from the school and the kids were such a joy to be around. I got to visit with people from all 50 states and about 60 foreign countries every year.

As with most small businesses, I worked 16-18 hours a day but really enjoyed it. I made jewelry, sewed hot pads, quilts, baby blankets, dolls (all kinds of animal dolls), wildlife pillows, crocheted dresses, made afghans, ... most everything you can make from cloth and thread, to sell in the shop. I miss it!

Because of health reasons we moved to Belle a couple of years ago.

We had four children. Bart Leland, was born 6-29-60, died 1960 and La Donna Lynne, born 9-20-62, died 1962. Debra Lee, our daughter was born in 1964. She just returned from Colorado and is working in Deadwood while attending advanced classes at Spearfish College. Then, 18 years later we had Murel Frank, born in 1982. He is a detention officer in Gillette, Wyoming.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Reunion!

I was discharged in 1961 and returned to Sturgis where I worked on a dairy farm.

In 1963 I met and married Patty. We moved to Belle Fourche where we have lived since.

I have spent most of my life running heavy equipment and ranching on the side.
Patty has been a R.N. and Director of Nursing for 35 years, working at Ft. Meade, Sturgis and Belle Fourche.

We had four children, Mary born in 1963, died 1963. John was born in 1964, Jim in 1967 and Bob in 1969.
We have four grandchildren, 2 boys and 2 girls.

Vonda (Simons) Jensen
Sun Lakes, AZ

Hi Gang,

Right after graduation I went home to care for my mother who was ill with cancer. She passed away on my 18th birthday in January 1959. In April 1959 I married Volmer Jensen from Faith. We will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary next year.

Volmer was in college in Brookings studying Civil Engineering when our daughter Venita was born in Brookings in May of 1960. After Graduation in Dec. of 1961 and receiving an Officer commission in the U.S. Army we moved to Colorado Springs. It was here at the Fort Carson Army Hospital that our son Vaughn was born in March 1963.

In May of 1964 Volmer was out of the Army and he had accepted a job with the Federal Highway Administration which involved a move to Willows, California. That was the beginning of our many moves on an average of every 3 years for the next 30 years from one coast to the other and places like Denver, Bismarck and Helena in between. It was a wonderful life seeing the USA and meeting many beautiful friends we still hold dear. During these years I stayed busy working part time, volunteering many hours and raising our family.

Volmer retired from his job as Regional Administrator in Kansas City, Missouri in October of 1994 and a few months later we moved to Rapid City. We really enjoyed our place overlooking the West side of the city but in 1998 Volmer’s kidney’s failed and he had to start dialysis. He went through two transplants at Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota. Because of this we decided a warmer climate and access to an excellent Medical facility were priorities so in 2002 we built a house in Sun Lakes, Arizona on the Southern edge of the Phoenix area and sold the home in Rapid City.

Mayo has a Clinic and Hospital in the Northern part of the Metro area which have been a godsend to us. We used it heavily in 2004 when Volmer received a third transplant there. That was the only year we did not spend the summer back in the Black Hills. In Dec. 07 he spent 23 days in the Mayo hospital with pneumonia and it will be another 5 months or more for a relatively full recovery. His kidney is again failing and is on dialysis while we wait for one through the national list or a living donor becomes available.

We had been taking our motor home back to South Dakota each summer but in 2005 we decided to again have a permanent place in the Hills. So we had a town home built in Sturgis. Moved in the spring of 06 and enjoyed it again the summer of 07. Sold the motor home last summer after having it for 7+ years.

Our daughter Venita and her husband Jeff now live just 3 miles from us after moving to Arizona in 2006 from the Twin Cities. She graduated from Montana State and is substitute teaching in the area. Her husband is a graduate of University of Nevada at Reno and manages an office in Tempe for Greentree Financial. Venita’s daughter Britni is now in her second year at Arizona State University just a few miles up the road in Tempe. She is the only grandchild and the light of our lives. She is all grown up at 20 years!

Our son Vaughn and his wife Susan live in Woodbury, Minnesota . Both are graduates of South Dakota State University. She is a Civil Engineer with the Federal Highway Administration and he is Senior Vice President with Willis Re Inc..

We have been blessed in so many ways and are so thankful for every day we have to enjoy our family, friends and do some traveling.

Phyllis Barker Wright
                              Highland, CA

After graduation I attended Black Hills State for three years before going to work at Black Hills and Badlands Assn in Sturgis, promoting travel to our beautiful area. I was with them for two years then, like many of our Class of ‘58, I was ready to spread my wings and moved to Tennessee in 1963. I joined the church choir and married the choir director, Stan Wright. I never wanted to marry a minister..."never say never..." and Stan was not one when we got married. He was the band and choral director at Bradley High School, in Cleveland. We were married in 1964 and moved back to Sturgis because Stan had accepted the choral position at our dear old ala mater, SHS (following Thielen).                     (photo:1942, twins & brother Duane, class of 1955)

My twin, Phil,  was band director in the Junior High at that time and those were wonderful years. Being back in Sturgis was a real joy for me. Our quiet little town was still Mayberry U.S.A. and had not yet taken on the new reputation of "Harley Heaven".

A couple of years later, both Phil and Stan entered church music - making me eat my words about not marrying a minister. This began the greatest adventure of our lives and also proved to be our greatest blessing. The bottom line is, I’d do it again in a heart beat! I learned it really was best to let God guide my life. I found it was just plain fun to help with youth choirs and kids choirs while Stan did the adult choir and orchestra. It was exciting to do the Christmas and Easter productions. Our kids were always involved and now they all enjoy being a part of the music in each of their churches.

During our 35 years in church music we lived in Tennessee, South Dakota, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and finally landed in California in 1975. We love Southern California, crazy as that sounds, and don't even mind the hustle, bustle of the freeways. We live in Highland about midway between Los Angeles and Palm Springs. We are just an hour away from everything fun...the Pacific, the Desert, and the San Bernardino Mountains - a bit of the Black Hills.

We have three great kids:
Vanessa lives in Lodi, Ca,  is married to a minister and they have two boys.
Stephanie lives in Highland, CA. She has two boys and one girl (our only granddaughter) and her husband is Dean at Cal Baptist University in Riverside.
Our son, Brent, is a firefighter/engineer in Indio, Ca and he and his wife have three boys.

At this writing Stan and I have been on our honeymoon for 43 years and are blessed in so many ways. Our eight grandkids keep us on our toes and we love grand parenting. We have stayed involved in church music and sing in the choir. Stan has a Southern Gospel Quartet called Salt & Light and it is fun to travel with them around the California area. I have become their greatest groupie. I spend my free time working in my flower garden, attending theater and concerts, stamping and making greeting cards, and reading.

How privileged we all were to have lived in sweet little Sturgis during the 1950s. Life was good. It was safe and a real pleasure to walk to school. The guys drove up and down main street in their hot Chevys with glass pack mufflers and neckers knobs. I loved going to Carl’s after school for a cherry coke and french fries and listening to that "shocking" Elvis Presley on the jukebox. On hot evenings we would all pile in the car and head to Bear Butte for a swim in that muddy pool.

Favorite teacher: Lillian Anderson... who can forget her 200 vocabulary words each week and drowning in Shakespeare?

Stan and I are believers in "Come grow old with me, the best is yet to come."      Can’t wait for old age!!!!

PHIL BARKER
Newport News, VA

Hello, Great Classmates!

SHS was a highlight of my life- especially band and choir (ballgames, concerts, festivals, competitions). Great teachers like Francis Benson and Charles Thielen made music so exciting…I’m sure that was what got me started in a music career. Went to Black Hills State to major in Music. After graduation, my first job was in Sturgis as Junior High Band/Choir Director and assistant to the High School music directors. Thought I’d be gone to heaven – teaching in “MY” high school band room! Loved junior high kids.

Moved to Tennessee in 1965 to direct the choir for a church radio network and teach at our church college. We were blessed to take music tours throughout the U.S., Caribbean, Europe, and Israel. Serving Jesus Christ in a music ministry has been my greatest joy. He’s my Lord and Savior. Retracing the steps of Paul the apostle in Greece and Cyprus, and Jesus in Israel, is a cherished memory.

In 1967, I married the dream girl of my life…Betty Womack of Hampton, VA. She’s a teacher, musician, writer and singer. We have enjoyed our years of music ministry – working in churches, recording studios, TV and radio.

Three daughters have enriched our lives – Julie (1969), Lori (1972), and Amy (1975). They are all dedicated teachers who love the Lord. Our added joys, grandsons Taylor (9) and Logan (5), live in Tennessee, and the 10 hour drive to see them has become just a breeze to us. Every other year, we visit our middle daughter, Lori and husband Jonathan, in Japan where they are missionaries. On one visit, we went to Korea and China where we climbed the Great Wall.

In the ‘70s, I lived out a boyhood dream and became a pilot. Bought and sold airplanes as a hobby – never got rich – but flew a lot of airplanes. In 1984, my dad was diagnosed with cancer, so we moved to SD to be with him and assist my mother ( age 93, still living in Sturgis). After my dad’s passing, we moved to Virginia as Betty’s dad (who had health issues) had asked me to join his business. Imagine me learning to run an iron foundry. Reminded me of my growing up years in the Barker Housemoving business. Hard work disagrees with me! The foundry was sold in 1998 and Betty retired from teaching. She now has a gourmet gift basket business – I’m her delivery man, janitor, and stock boy. No pay…. But lots of chocolates. Church and family are now our real focus.

Anxious to see how young you guys look at the reunion. Hope you’ll recognize me!

MEMORIES

  • National Guard craze… The class of ’58 probably had more guys in the Guard than any other. I joined at age 15 (parent’s signature required!)  and stayed in for 10 years - I still remember my serial number. To meet Col. Brown and Major Hendrickson in uniform at Monday night drill was – shall I say – awkward. One summer camp, I was assigned to be Major Mel Hendrickson’s jeep driver. How traumatic was that to chauffeur the SHS Driver’s Ed. teacher? He complimented my driving – even though I hadn’t taken his D.E. class.

  • Choir… Charles Thielen needed volunteers to roll the piano into the gym where the choir practiced. Several underclassmen (naturally!) were pushing the piano full speed across the gym floor, when one of the Daanes jumped on for a ride. The big old upright piano began teetering. It fell backward breaking his arm. I believe it was Tom Daane. No choir that day. Mr. Thielen retained his job.

  • Band…the cheerleaders always rolled a big scoop shovel (Sturgis Scoopers) around the gym at basketball games. Why didn’t they use that scoop shovel in front of the band parades when we had to follow all those horses!! It was really hard to keep our shoes white.

James Goodwin
Greeley, CO

Jim went from school to the Navy for three years. He got married in 1961 to Mr. Woodle's niece, Clyle. They have lived in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Sturgis, San Jose, CA, Colorado Springs (35 years) and Greeley (5 years). Jim was Parts Manager, Service Director, etc. at Ford Agencies for 40 years.

Jim and Clyle have one son Shawn, who is an American Airlines pilot. They have one little granddaughter who is the delight of their lives. She will be two in June, and Jim said as far as priorities go, she is now #1!!

After the 30th reunion in 1988, he, his son and brothers, went to Alaska for 10 days and had an incredible time fishing and touring.   Jim retired in 2001 and spends his time having fun with the little granddaughter, flying his small plane and riding his motorcycle.   Jim is a leap year baby, so just celebrated his 17th birthday.   He said he is blessed to have good health.

He had one fun exchange with a classmate....he was just out in his backyard on a pretty Sunday evening when the phone rang and it was Fritz Sammeli. What a surprise! Fritz was traveling in his motorhome and had been to Lake Havasu.

Jim and his wife look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion this fall!
