Lou Ann Gesinger Clark
Phoenix, AZ

After graduation I attended South Dakota State for one year, then transferred to Sioux Valley Hospital for a two year training program as an X-Ray Technician.

In 1962 I moved to Phoenix to work at Good Samaritan Hospital.

I was married in May 1962 in Phoenix, and continued to work at the same hospital.     Our first child, Kelly, was born in 1964 and in 1966 we had a son, Paul.   In 1968 my husband was transferred to California with the Del Webb Corporation where our second son Christopher was born.

We moved back to Phoenix in 1970 and my husband started his own business.

I went to college in the 70's and took some computer and accounting classes and did the accounting and the office manager job for our contracting company.  My husband was a commercial general contractor.

I became semi-retired in 1995 and since then have just helped my husband manage our own commercial rental properties.

Throughout our working years we enjoyed boating with our family and friends, mostly on Lake Powell, where we created wonderful memories.   We built a home on the beach in Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) Mexico in 2003 and enjoy spending time down there with family and friends.   It is a joy having our 5 grandchildren there enjoying the beach.   It is a fabulous place to spend time.

We love traveling and have been able to spend wonderful times taking our motor home all around the US.  We have also enjoyed traveling from one end of Canada to the other.   This past summer we spent three weeks in Ireland and Scotland and then a month down in Central Mexico.

I have attended two class reunions since graduation.   I attended Sturgis High School my Junior and Senior years and have many fond memories.   I lived with my sister and her family while there.   She moved shortly after I graduated so there was not an occasion to return to Sturgis.

I hope to make it to this reunion.  Gads!!   50 years - where has the time gone!  Looking forward to seeing many of you.

MARY ANN GULLY FEROLO
Dixon, IL

Since my marriage in 1963, I have lived with my husband Jim in Dixon, IL  It is located about 100 miles west of Chicago. We have 2 children and 4 grandchildren that give us much joy and happiness.  I have had a career of 45 years as a music therapist working with special education populations, and  more recently, with hospice clients.

My special interests at this time are grandchildren, travel, attending concerts, enjoying friendships, and reading.

I do have a special memory of Sturgis.  After graduation, Joe DesJarlais asked if he could come over and demonstrate his sales pitch for selling Wearever cookware.  Its chief attribute was that it was a waterless method of cooking.  He put some carrots in the saucepan, turned on the burner, and cooked those carrots.  I had not planned on buying any pots and pans, but Joe made a believer of me in a very short time, and I bought the entire set.  Throughout the years I have thought of Sturgis as I pulled a pan out of the cabinet. Some of those pans have a continued life in the grandchildren's sandbox.

Even though I only lived in Sturgis 2 years,  I  fondly remember the friends, teachers, and activities of high school. I am grateful for living in the Black Hills area with the beautiful scenery and friendly people.

Robert (Bob) Willert
Amery, WI

I'm looking forward to the Class Reunion and getting together with everyone. Here, for what it is worth, is a brief history of what has transpired in my life since leaving Sturgis.

In our Sophomore year, my mother suffered a stroke and my parents moved to Rapid City so that mom could be closer to better medical care. I really wanted to stay in Sturgis and finish school there and tried living on my own as a 15 year old, but couldn't quite pull it off. I finally went to Rapid City and enrolled at Rapid Central High. That was a real bust and I didn't last more than a year. After quitting school before my junior year I kicked around doing a variety of different things among which was a brief stint as a ranch hand on a sheep ranch near Alzada, MT. Tommy Symonds helped me get that job. Somewhere in that period I, like many other young guys in Sturgis, was convinced by the Principal, Bill Brown, that joining the National Guard was the thing to do. So, I did.

Nothing much of interest happened through '57 and not having a high school diploma, there weren't very many jobs. I joined the Army. I was promptly put on orders to go overseas and was sent to Guam. I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences and the adventure of being in the South Pacific. While on Guam, the unit I was with was sent temporarily to Taiwan (Formosa) during the Formosan crisis in 1958. We spent 5 months there assisting the Nationalist Chinese in building Nike missile sites in the Linkau Mountain range. My tour of duty was completed in July of 1959, I returned to the US and enjoyed a 30-day leave in Rapid City and Sturgis.

Following my vacation, I took a bus to Minneapolis and my next assignment at Ft. Snelling, close to the international airport in Mpls/St.Paul. Once again I became involved with Nike missiles. This time they were Nike Hercules missile units positioned around the Twin Cities. That's how I came to live in Wisconsin. One of the units was located at Roberts, WI and I was sent there. I had trained to be a medical corpsman and each site had two medics assigned. Duty was pretty easy at the sites, especially for us medics. We simply had to make sure anyone reporting for sick call was really sick and those requiring aid we took to New Richmond, WI to the local clinic. Being young and single, of course, we were always trying to date the local girls in our free time, of which I had quite a bit.

My partner, or assistant since I had rank over him, soon became a good friend and as good friends do I was always letting him use the old car I had bought, so he could take a girl out on a date. Before long he was using my car more than I was and enjoying a far better social life. I finally told him that since he was enjoying so much success, he could share some of it with me. Surely the girl he was dating must know someone I could date. He set me up with a blind date that turned out to be one of the most miserable dates I have ever been on! I told him he had to do better than that if he wanted to keep using my car. He tried once more. The girl he was dating said she knew a real nice girl from school but she didn't think I had a chance with her. She was probably too good for the likes of me.

Well, my buddy's girlfriend arranged for us to meet. We went on a date and, as the old saying goes, the rest is history. My buddy had to find his own set of wheels from then on or double date with us. The good looking redhead and I hit it off pretty good and after a year we were engaged, then married on April 2, 1960. She must be a keeper since we are celebrating 48 years in April. Carol, my wife, grew up near New Richmond on a family farm. At graduation she moved to town and took a job as a telephone operator. She had a room in a boarding house rented out by a very strict old matron who watched after "her" girls as if they were her own. After our wedding we took an apartment in New Richmond and soon enjoyed the poverty of lower ranked enlisted soldiers. Not long after we got settled in, the army transferred me to another missile site near Bethel, MN and we moved to Cambridge, MN, nearby.

In 1961 two major events occurred. The first was the birth of our first child - Jeffrey Beaumont Willert, on March 6th. I guess that proved to all speculators, both in her family and on base, that we Did Not Have To Get Married. The second was being placed on orders to go to Germany in April of 61. I did not have sufficient rank to have the army ship my family over so made the journey alone with 1,500 other soldiers on a troop ship. (That was my second adventure on a ship, the first being the trip to Guam a couple of years earlier). Upon reaching Bremerhaven, we boarded a commercial train and traveled south to Bavaria and a town by the name of Neckarsulm, which was to be my home for the next three years. Once again, I was assigned to a missile unit. This time it was Red Stone ballistic missiles aimed toward Czechoslovakia and the Warsaw Pact. Our unit was one of two in Germany armed with Nuclear warheads and, at that time in history, things were quite tense. I got to Germany a short few months before the Berlin Wall went up. That September we went on alert and stayed out on the ready for three weeks. Finally things calmed down and we returned to our post and resumed a somewhat normal routine.

I was really missing my family and was working evenings and weekends as a bouncer at the Enlisted/NCO Club to earn money to bring Carol and our son Jeff over. After having a number of sports coats ripped off my back by drunks, we finally had enough for the plane fare and Carol and our 6-month old were on their way. The only negative of the whole time was I was so nervous awaiting their arrival at Frankfurt International Airport that I took up smoking again, a habit I had broken for over a year. They arrived safely and we took up residence in all that we could afford - a converted chicken coop that had been made into a tiny apartment. We thought we could still smell the chickens. During our stay in Germany we lived in four different apartments, each an improvement over the past one. We did have the opportunity to rent from some very nice families and enjoyed the experiences greatly. Carol once again became pregnant and our second son, Douglas Jerome was born on January 13, 1964 at the Army Hospital in Stuttgart, Germany. Our tour of duty came to an end in April and on Easter Sunday we flew home. Our adventure wasn't quite over though; during the flight home somewhere near New Foundland, our plane suddenly took a sharp drop of 500-600 ft.   The pilot announced we all needed to secure ourselves and expect a rough ride. He went on to say that we were feeling the aftershocks of the massive earthquake in Alaska.

Following our arrival at an airbase in Maryland we had to take a bus to Brooklyn to pick up the car we had shipped from Germany. Then we tried to figure out how to get out of New York and head West. We stopped somewhere in Pennsylvania and took a motel room to rest up. The following morning we drove straight through to Carol's sister's home in southern Wisconsin. Then we went onto New Richmond where, once again, I would be assigned to the missile unit near there.

We spent the balance of my enlistment in the New Richmond area and remained there following my discharge. I had considered the army as a career and apparently the army thought I would re-enlist also because in November of 1965 they gave me early warning I would be going to Vietnam in March of 1966. My discharge date was February 17, 1966 and after about a second and a half thinking about it, I decided to become a civilian.

We settled in New Richmond, or rather, on a couple acres acquired from Carol's dad about five miles from town. Not knowing what I wanted to do when I grew up, I took a few different jobs most of which were located in St. Paul, MN a half hour commute from where we lived. I sold shoes at a J.C. Penney department store, then managed a Health and Beauty Aids department in a K-Mart for a couple of years, then became a buyer of Health and Beauty Aids for a regional wholesale distributor. After about five years doing that an opportunity came up where I could join the active duty portion of the National Guard and with any luck complete my 20 years of military service to earn a retirement. We managed to get almost 17 of those 20 years in when I was severely injured with cervical spinal injuries. I was medically discharged and granted disability through the Veteran's Administration.

Along with my disability I was eligible for vocational rehabilitation and was able to go to college. In 1987 I matriculated as a freshman at University of WI, River Falls. I graduated in May of 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism with a minor in English. Aside from the huge satisfaction of earning a degree, it didn't do me a damn bit of good since I couldn't buy a job in the field of journalism. I was "over qualified". My newly learned smarts did help me get in the door of a small electronics firm in Amery, WI where I was hired as Production Manager/Human Resources Person and all-around Gofer. Being a small company, we all did everything but clean the office. The owner of the company and his partner were really great people to work for and I stayed on with them until my retirement 5 years ago.

Carol and I found a piece of property near Amery that we really liked and bought it with the intent of building our retirement home. We did that in 1997 and here we live today. Our sons both are married to local girls. Jeff and his wife Nanette, who is from New Richmond, have a daughter, Stacy, our oldest grandchild, and Brandon, our only grandson. Doug and his wife DeEtte, who is from Amery, have two daughters, Mariah, a 16 year old, and Emily, 12 years old.

I am active in the American Legion post in New Richmond, not quite as active in the VFW post in Amery, and a Life-member of DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Carol and I both served as board members of the St. Croix Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and I was Chairman of that organization for two years. We are partners, along with both our sons, a brother-in-law and three friends, in a hunting cabin/summer place in Northern Wisconsin, about an hour drive from our home. We enjoy it greatly and try to get up as much as possible.

My time in retirement is spent improving on my collection of military firearms and other interesting guns. I attend gun shows and in general am always on the lookout for collectables. We are blessed that both our sons and their families are nearby so we get to watch the grandkids grow up and go to their sporting events and the like. And of course I get the privilege of being able to hunt with my sons and grandson and this past year our granddaughter Emily came to hunting camp, the first female in the history of our camp.

As to memories of SHS, I can honestly say that there are no favorite memories. But I must say that after Joe sent me the class roster and I started reading the names, it was like an old movie was playing before my eyes. So many of you that I haven't seen for over 50 years appear before me in that movie and I truly look forward to seeing you in person. I regret that my good friend, Delbert, won't be there to renew that friendship, but I'm sure his spirit will be there.

DALE THEIN
Littleton, CO

Dale married his wife Marilyn, from Lead, SD, in 1961.  They have two sons, Tim and Shelby, and three grandchildren.

After high school Dale worked in Kansas City MO and where he went to Rockhurst College for two years.    He went to California "just for fun"  and attended San Joe State,  then he moved back to South Dakota.     Dale worked on the Titan Missile sites and graduated from Black Hills State.    After graduation he and his wife both taught for a year in Alaska, then moved to Greeley and received a Masters in Psych/Counseling at the University of Northern Colorado.    Dale taught several years at Colorado State Institiute for Girls in Golden, Colorado, becoming Principal of the school.

Dale presently is in the business of buying, remodeling and reselling homes in the Denver area.   He loves the work and has no plans to retire.   He also owns the family ranch in the Hills, west of Lead, where he goes twice a year to work his cattle.   In the fall he trucks them down to a farm in Tilford where a rancher friend feeds them through the winter months.   Interestingly that farm is where Don Nesland lived when we were all in school.   Many a hay ride and party was held at that ranch.

MEMORIES: Dale had a wart in the palm of his hand and got the bright idea to remove it during an English 4 class.  He took out his pocket knife, cut around it ...but when he pulled it out it had a long root and began to bleed profusely.  All over!   He applied pressure which made it bleed worse and several girls began reacting to the blood running across his desk and onto the floor.    Lil Anderson came running, saw him holding the amputated wart and the knife and immediately sent him to Col. Brown.    Dale doesn't believe he got an A in English that semester.

MARVIN HARWOOD
Carlsbad, CA

Hi – my name is Marv Harwood and I am a recovering graduate of Sturgis High School – Class of 1958. Given all the good times we had and all the hell we raised one never fully recovers from the stage of innocence we all had before entering high school. In my particular case grades 1 through 8 were in a one-room school with 3 other relatives. The good news was that I was the smartest one in my class. The bad news was that I was the dumbest one in my class (I was the only one in my class for 8 years). Going to high school was a total breakout. Free at last, free at last, praise God I was free at last. At last I had others in my own class.

Bio Information:

Wife – Becky Kjallstrom

Son – Jeffrey/Margarita (Stephanie, Natalie, Hunter)

Son – Jason/Jill (Ashley)

Son – James/Kristine (Jimmy, Ethan)

After graduating from high school I went to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Upon getting a BS degree in Civil Engineering I was off to Southern California and have been there ever since. Becky and I got married in 1964. We lived in Burbank, CA from 1964 till 1969 while working for the County of Los Angeles. After that we decided that we wanted my career to be in the private sector and moved to Orange County. I worked for a number of civil engineering firms, land development firms, and homebuilding firms. Given the nature of building entire master-planned communities (homes, parks, commercial centers, industrial parks, golf courses, major roadways and infrastructure) it has been an exciting career with an occasional down period to struggle through.

Becky and I semi-retired in 2006 – still working 2 days a week on average just to ease into retirement. On retirement we moved into an age-restricted secure community in San Diego County. It has many activities to choose from to keep active – including a recreation center and an executive golf course.

During our years we have had the opportunity to travel to a number of destinations. This is a real passion with me. Planning the vacation on internet is the best part and allows me an opportunity to set everything up so that we can be efficient on the ground – more adventure. On an annual basis we go to some destination in Mexico (Cancun every other year, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Manzanillo, Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo, Gaudalajara, Guanajato, San Miguel Allende, Tlaquepaque, Lake Chapala, and Taquila), Panama, Costa Rica, Tahiti/Moorea , Southeast Asia, Central Europe, Italy, and a cruise of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. We have also traveled most of the US but there is always something to see or do. Being retired we intend do more traveling.

Our favorite time spent is with our kids/grandkids (3 boys/3girls). We are lucky that they all live within an hour drive. Obviously we can cover all holidays and special days as we choose. Needless to say the kids are happy to have unpaid babysitting.

Ah the memories of SHS. This could be a total book because high school was the best for me. Our class was interesting – small enough so it was easy to know every classmate. Of course nothing could be kept secret. Whatever happened on a date was all over school the next morning. The following memories come to mind:

  • One day in social studies class (Mr. Dooby’s) things were real boring. I opened my flip-top desk and saw some matches. I lit one and dropped it into the desk – nothing. I lit a second one, dropping it again, and this time it lit a small piece of paper. No big deal, except Phyllis Duly started to make a deal of it. Soon, as a wisp or two of smoke came out of the desk, she was in panic mode. Of course this was enough to get the attention of Dooby. He sent me to Grunwald’s office – I did get a week off.

  • I fondly remember football as a senior. It was the Thursday of the last week before the Rapid City game. The weather was cold and damp so the coaches said the players could vote on whether we practiced. It was a tie vote. Bucky O’Connor, who was nursing an injury and in street clothes, broke the tie and sent us to the practice field. Of course that was the night that my front teeth met up with Jerry Chaffee’s elbow. Without 3 teeth it may have been a bit of an advantage, for a while against the larger opponent. Thanks Bucky.

  • I also remember the hallway pranks between classes. One was to remove the fountain heads on the drinking fountains and watch someone, not paying attention, take a drink

  • Another prank was when some of the senior boys removed the hinge pins on the door to the gym. Shortly thereafter there was an assembly in the gym. I don’t remember who opened the door and ended up with the door on the floor.

  • I also remember the drives into Vanocker Canyon for outings and cave crawling. One winter the road was a total glaze of snow and ice. Some of us took our sleds to the high spot in the canyon. We rode our sleds all the way to the bottom – I believe over 2 miles. It was fast and fun. Good thing there were no cars coming up the road.

As I said this could be a book. I really look forward to seeing all the bio’s and, even more, seeing everyone in September.

JoAnn Baumann Barnett
Littleton, CO

After graduating from National College of Business, I married Dale Ferguson and traveled to Germany in 1959 (where he was stationed) and lived there for two years. We returned to South Dakota, had two daughters, D'Anna and Debra, and were divorced.

I later met and married Don Barnett and lived in Rapid City until 1974. We moved first to Riverton, Wyoming (where the girls graduated from high school) and then to Denver, Colorado, where we still live.

Daughter D'Anna and her husband, Ron Catterson, have three children: Jocelyn, 15, Madeline, 12, and Jared, 9 (our wonderful grandkids.) They live in Evergreen, Colorado; with one in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary school, keeping Ron, D'Anna and us busy trying to attend all the school functions and after-school activities. D'Anna has always been heavily involved in helping out during the school day, but also has her own business: making specialty soaps.

Daughter Debra is single, lives in Cheyenne, Wyoming with a menagerie of pets, and works for the Wyoming State Dept. of Transportation as a water quality specialist. She has to fly all over Wyoming in state airplanes to review and sign off on highway projects. She is a gifted artist as well, besides being heavily involved with her two Arabian horses, helping out at the stables and keeping up with friends with the same interests.

My husband Don is a consultant attached to a corporation in Denver; I have been a legal assistant for a sole proprietor for over 12 years. I work in a lovely 116 year old house (now converted to offices) that has a lot of the original woodwork and fireplaces. It's a beautiful setting and makes a very pleasant place to work. Don and I have been interested in politics (Don more than me), have done a lot of community service, and are voracious readers. Don, especially, is quite a historian. Neither one of us is retired and will probably keep our jobs for a long time before calling "King's X."

Sherrol Ellefson and I renewed our friendship in Wyoming and have continued on in Colorado, although now mostly by telephone. Janice Hardy, Sherrol, and I would meet for lunch during the times that Janice worked in Colorado.

My two sisters, Bonnie and Louise, live in Rapid City and Sturgis. My mother is in good health and lives in Belle Fourche.

 Janet Pellegrin Larive
Buckeye, AZ

Hi Everybody,

I got marred right out of high school to Albert Larive from St. Onge. Which means we'll have our 50th anniversary this year also. He was an electrical lineman, so we moved around, we've seen a lot of country and met a lot of great people. Then in 1972 we moved to Prescott, Az., 1973 we moved to Phoenix, Az., and in 1984 we moved to Buckeye, Az., just west of Phoenix, and that is still our present address. Arizona was to be a temporary work stop!   We're still here, so guess the work isn't done yet!!

We have three sons, Bob, Kelly, and Bryan. They all live close by, so that works out real well.
Bob and his wife Tammy have one daughter, Morgan, and two sons, Tyler and Logan. Kelly has a daughter, Abby, and a son, Kyle. Bryan has an English Bulldog, Dudley, that he shares with us!

We still have the home place at Enning, S.D. so we go up there every year, put up hay and spend the summer out there. Our boys use to come up and help my parents in the summer, now our grandsons come up and help us in the summer. They seem to enjoy it and we certainly enjoy and appreciate the help.

Albert put together a motorhome for us, so that's what we travel all over in, bring it up to S.D. and stay in it in the summer. We also took it to Alaska in 1998, with my sister and her husband (Lila Jean and Ronald), and two of my cousins and their spouses, and their 95 year old mother. It was an awesome trip!!

I have a lot of memories from S.H.S. because I enjoyed all four years there. I was in band, so did a lot of marching with Mr. Benson trying to keep us all in a straight line!

I have kept in touch with some of our classmates, but some I haven't seen since the reunion in 1997.

Our address is on the master list, so stop in if you get down this way.
See you this summer.

Gene Paul Reichert....Billings, MT

July 1, 1940 - September 2, 2007

Gene Paul Reichert, 67, Billings, MT, died Sunday, September 2, 2007, near his home due to an ATV accident.

Gene was born July 1, 1940, in New Underwood, SD. He attended first grade at the Doyle School located near Hereford, SD. Due to the distance from his home, at the age of six he spent his first year of school boarded 12 miles from home during the school week. The next seven years, he attended the Reichert School which was relocated several times over the years. He attended high school in Sturgis, SD, where he was involved in 4-H and Future Farmers of America, and graduated in 1958. Following high school, he volunteered for the draft and joined the United States Army, where he served in Germany.

In 1963, he married Joan Tines and from this union two children were born, a daughter, DeLynn and a son, Monte. During the next several years he farmed, ranched, and did various agricultural custom ventures.   In 1974, the family moved to Union Center, SD. From 1974 to 1980, he built and operated Central Feeds, the first custom feed mill in Central Meade County.

During the 1970's, he acquired his pilot’s license.   Gene enjoyed many hours flying his plane hunting coyotes and fox.

In 1980, Gene moved to Billings, MT, where he married Mona Vig, to whom he was married from 1981 to 2005. They started Gene Reichert Trucking, which they operated for nine years. In the 1990’s, Gene earned his US Coast Guard Captains License, and for several years conducted tours on the Big Horn Lake.

DON NESLAND - San Francisco, CA

After High School, I attended the University of South Dakota from 1958-1962, studying history, psychology, musical arts, Latin and German.   I played for church services during this time.

The Navy got me in 1963 and sent me to Newport, RI. I was in Marine engineering with 110 men on WWII destroyers. We charged around the Pacific Ocean out of Long Beach to Vietnam several times.    My wife, Donna, died of multiple sclerosis during my time in the Navy.

I am now retired, living in San Francisco. I still enjoy playing music in my church.
